Chapel on the Bridge

Built in 1483 as part of the town’s river bridge, the chapel was likely funded by Archbishop Thomas Rotherham and once displayed rich decoration, including a finely crafted golden Virgin and Child. Travellers stopped here to pray for safe journeys until the 1547 Dissolution closed it, after which it became an almshouse under the Feoffees of the Common Lands.

Local legend links the chapel to Mary Queen of Scots during her 1569 stay in Rotherham, though records show she was held nearby instead. The building also bears marks of the 1643 Civil War battle on the bridge, where Royalist musket fire left visible dents in its stone. Over time, the chapel served as a prison, a dwelling, and later a tobacconist. Public campaigns in the early 1900s led to its restoration, completed in 1924, with further work in 1975 adding the impressive stained glass east window visitors see today.
