Floodlighting Project set to Transform Town Centre Jewel.

The dramatic impact of the historic Rotherham Minster on the town centre spread out below it is to be highlighted, literally.

Each facade of the imposing former parish church, towering over All Saints Square, will be illuminated by Christmas.

The lighting forms the first phase of a larger project to improve the Minster and its grounds

The improvements are funded by the Townscape Heritage Initiative, which dovetails with Yorkshire Forwards Rotherham Renaissance programme but which concentrates on the High Street and Minster Yard.

It will carry out essential repairs and restoration work to help protect and preserve some of the town centre heritage. It is funded by Rotherham Borough Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Yorkshire Forward.

The councils Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Planning and Transportation, Cllr Gerald Smith, said: The improvements will undoubtedly increase the number of people using the Minster Yard, as they will create a more pleasant environment to relax in and form an attractive link to the surrounding shops and cafes.

Work to install the floodlighting is expected to be completed around mid-November, followed by an official switch on event before Christmas.

The second phase will then see extensive landscaping improvements to create a pleasant open green space with high quality seating, planting and paving.

More second phase work will expand the entrance steps and modify the wall on Church Street to open out an approachable piazza creating a welcoming entrance to Minster Yard.
